Girls, Women and the Media


Girls Women + Media Project: An organization "working to increase awareness of how pop culture and media represent, affect, employ, and serve girls and women---and to advocate for improvement in those areas."

About-Face: "About-Face promotes positive self-esteem in girls and women of all ages, sizes, races and backgrounds through a spirited approach to media education, outreach and activism." An interesting and informative site, with lots of great links. (The site exposes offensive media and ad material-- not for the faint of heart!)

Women's Image Network: Promoting a postive portrayal of women in theater, television and film

Just think: Teaching young people to understand the words and images in the media and think for themselves.

National Institute on Media and the Family: "The mission of the National Institute on Media and the Family is to maximize the benefits and minimize the harm of media on children and families through research and education." Websites include tools for rating and determining kid-appropriate content.

 
Health


Girl Power! Campaign: "The national public education campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help encourage and motivate 9- to 13- year-old girls to make the most of their lives. Girls at 8 or 9 typically have very strong attitudes about their health, so Girl Power! seeks to reinforce and sustain these positive values among girls ages 9-13 by targeting health messages to the unique needs, interests, and challenges of girls." There's a section for parents, too.

iemily.com: This site foucing on girls' health is geared towards adolecents and teens, but useful for parents as well.

Kids Health: Informative health site with sections geared towards parents, kids, and teens.

Seattle Girls' School: Seattle Girls' School is dedicated to fostering academic excellence, strong self-esteem, and a life-long love of learning in girls. SGS focuses especially on math and science with a hands-on curriculum.

Girls on the Run International: The Girls on the Run headquarters-- where it all started!

The Ophelia Project:"The Ophelia Projectis dedicated to creating a culture that is emotionally, physically, and socially safe, where girls are respected and nurtured."

Girls in America: A website dedicated to the Girls in America Series ("RUN LIKE A GIRL and SMILE PRETTY go inside the experience of American teenage girls as they grapple with growing up in a world that tells them they are fat, ugly, loud-mouthed or frigid if they are anything but conventionally pretty, thin, unassuming and sweet.")

Club Girl Tech: Girl Tech is devoted to encouraging girls in technology use. In the "parents" section, there is a girl-postive search engine.

The Alchohol and Drug Information Clearinghouse: Lots of information for parents, taechers and kids about drug prevention

Lion & Lamb Project: An organization with a mission to stop the marketing of voilence to children. Website includes a lot of resources for parents.

Dads & Daughters: The companion website to the book by Joe Kelly, recommended by Molly Barker, Founder of Girls on the Run.
